This is not just a Windows thing, but Windows displays the process in the Task Manager, so users see it and assume something is wrong.

This is not to say you can’t experience performance issues when the System Idle Process shows a high CPU usage load, but the issue lies elsewhere. If it’s not, something else is consuming processor cycles without your knowledge.

You might have noticed that the svchost. While this process is sometimes associated with malware, it’s primarily a legitimate and system-critical Windows process. If you’re unsure, use the svchost. In that case, just let Windows Update finish its thing. Since Windows 10, you can’t easily delay or pause Windows Update. While you can schedule when to install new updates, Windows downloads updates as needed. This may randomly cause svchost.

What you can change, however, is whether your computer shares downloaded updates with peers. Turn this off to conserve bandwidth and processing power. Here you can Allow downloads from other PCs , but you’ll want this set to Off. From Delivery Optimization , click Advanced options once more.

In this next screen, you can limit the bandwidth of downloads or uploads of Windows and app updates. The only other workaround to tame high CPU usage related to downloading updates is to temporarily disable Windows Update. This will prevent Windows from downloading updates. However, we don’t recommend this solution! A background process is a program that’s running on your PC, even though it’s not open in a window.

A typical computer will have many background processes running simultaneously, as Windows itself requires some to run. But as you install programs over the years, you may collect more and more and eventually overwhelm your PC. The Processes tab will appear by default, displaying not only overall CPU usage but also the usage of each app. You should do this while no other programs are open to prevent confusion. In Windows 10 , head over to the Startup tab within the Task Manager.

Sustained high CPU usage makes your CPU much hotter than normal, which can cause slow performance, freezes, or crashes. High CPU usage on Windows 10 and older versions can be caused by a range of factors including intensive processes, high internal temperatures, or even malware.

Your PC might be busy installing a Windows Update or rendering a video in the background. In cases like these, high CPU usage is normal. If not, there might be something else going on. In these cases, even the smallest workload will cause high CPU usage. Viruses can wreak all sorts of havoc on your PC, including high processor usage. Outdated device drivers and other apps can become buggy and even incompatible with current versions of Windows Updating your drivers and software is a great way to clean up and speed up your PC.

Specific applications and processes are known to occasionally cause high CPU usage. These can include:. Windows 10 and the apps on your PC are constantly writing log files or checking for notifications in the background. AVG TuneUp automatically detects the apps responsible for high CPU usage and lets you deactivate them with a single click — leaving you with plenty of CPU power for the apps you actually want to use. This site in other languages x. My personal computer at home is having the same exact problem and it has never been affiliated with a domain or WSUS. I think what we were getting at was, even a standalone computer is going to have some communication with Microsoft Updates.

On a domain those filter through a WSUS server. Are your computers set to download and install? Just download? Mine at home does this too, but being my gaming rig, I disabled updates all together. I will manually check and install them when I have time. I don’t need it hogging any resources while I’m using it. Back to yours, the updates download intermittently as they come down from Microsoft or WSUS , and install based on the day you set it to.

So you might see a slow down on any given day based on what gets released. I’m rather surprised it’s a noticeable difference. I could be wrong on a cause, but I was just throwing out an idea. It was indeed an update to the updater it self, but i needed auto patcher to push it through.
